APA Sample PhD Dissertation Research Paper Format Citation And References

Here are some PDFs of the APA sample research paper citation and references I usually follow when writing a PhD/ MBA dissertation paper. This might be useful to you, because the format is standard for all APA cited papers. The essay should be typed double space with a 1” margin on both sides. The paper size used should be standard, 8.5” x 11”. The recommended font is 12 pt. Times New Roman.

At the top of the page, you are going to create a Running Head, with inserted page numbers at the top right part. Use all capital letters when typing the Running Head or header flush. This is a short version of your title and should not exceed the 50 characters count, which include the spacing a punctuation. The APA PhD dissertation paper should include these four major sections, namely the Title Page, Abstract, Main Body, and the References.

Title Page. The APA Title Page consists of the Running Head or flush header in capital letters, Page Number at the top right of the page, full Title of the paper in upper and lower case letters (may take up one or two lines), the Author’s name, institutional affiliation, the name of instructor (optional), and the date of research (optional). The title page is one full page.

Abstract. The Abstract begins a new page. Center the word “Abstract” on the first line of the page. No bold formatting, no italics, no underlining, and no quotation marks. On the next line, write a brief summary of the key points of your research. Please do not indent.

How do you write your Abstract? It should discuss your research topic, hypothesis, sample group or participants, methods, results, data analysis, and conclusions. All of this should be as concise as between 150 and 250 words. Most people now make a list of the keywords on the Abstract page. To do this, you can indent just like when you write a new paragraph, and then type the keywords in italics. Listing the keywords will help the researchers find your work easily in a crowded database.

Main Body. For the margins, you should use a 1 inch margin. Do not align the right margin. To set the margin in MsWord, choose the Margins in the Page Layout menu. Line spacing should be a double space for the entire document. Font should be Times New Roman 12 pt. Indent the first line of each paragraph ½” by pressing the Tab key once.

For the section headings, you may highlight the new sections in the essay paper. Most PhD research papers contain sections like Method, Results, and Discussion. Headings should be centered and in boldface type. Capitalize all words except articles, conjunctions, and prepositions unless they are the first word of a title of subtitle. Your research paper should include a page number on every page. While headings should be bold and centered with all major words capitalized, the subheadings should be left justified and bold, with all the major words capitalized also.

APA Headings and Subheadings

APA Reference List. Start a new page for the reference list or references or reference page. Center the word, References, at the top of the page. Don’t forget to double space the reference list. Start the first line of each reference entry at the left margin, indent the subsequent line five spaces. Organize your list in an alphabetical order.

Footnotes. There are two types of footnotes that you may use: those that provide additional content and those that acknowledge copyright permission status. Footnotes should not be longer than one paragraph. All footnotes should be numbered consecutively in the order in which they appear in your paper.

You may write the footnotes at the bottom of the page in which they appear, or in consecutive order on a separate page after the reference page. In the text of your research paper, footnote numbers should be written in the form of superscript and should follow any punctuation, except a dash.

You may include the footnotes section at the end of your research paper, which should appear after the reference page. Start the footnotes section on its own page and center the word Footnotes on the top of the page.

Appendix. The Appendix page appears after your Reference Page and after your Footnote page (if you have one). If your paper has one appendix, simply label it as an Appendix. If it has more than one, then label each one with a capital letter, for example, Appendix A, Appendix B, etc. Each Appendix should start on a new page and the label should be centered on the top of the page.
